Sustainable gifting: How to give gifts that are more environmentally friendly
Looking to be more mindful when giving gifts? We have gathered our best advice for giving eco-friendly presents.
Support local businesses
Whenever possible, shop at local stores. This helps reduce your carbon footprint, supports the local economy, and decreases emissions from shipping.
Choose practical or consumable gifts
Are you buying something just for the sake of it? Sometimes the pressure to give a gift can lead to unnecessary purchases that end up forgotten or thrown away.
Practical gifts can still be attractive. Consider a variety of soaps or shampoos. Consumable gifts are almost always appreciated. Why not opt for chocolate or candies?
Experiences and gift certificates
If something practical isn't suitable, why not give an unforgettable experience as a gift? Treat them to a local activity such as pottery making, archery, or an escape room. The possibilities are endless!
Be Environmentally friendly and plastic free
When choosing gifts, be conscious of the environment. Opt for products that are free of plastic, both in their design and packaging. Many single-use plastics have eco-friendly alternatives, but if plastic can't be avoided go for items that are built to last.
Wrapping paper
Don't forget about the wrapping! Many wrapping papers and gift bags cannot be recycled. To check if a wrap can be recycled, crumple it into a ball and see if it bounces back. If it does, it cannot be placed in the recycling bin.
If it's too big to be wrapped with paper why not utilise a cotton scarf or another sustainable material giving them two gifts in one!
Here's a quick check-list to see how your gifts check out:
⚡️Bought from a local business
⚡️Plastic-free and sustainably sourced
⚡️Can be recycled or loved forever
⚡️Wrapped in recyclable paper or alternative eco-friendly packaging
